Archives For Technology

Last week a friend introduced me to a new mobile browser. I’d been pretty happy with Chrome, but I figured I’d give the new guy a shot since it supposedly integrated with Evernote. I got more than I bargained for and Dolphin is now my mobile browser of choice for many reasons.

Homepage = Accessibility

The home page gives you direct access to the web through a number of available resources. These include: Continue Reading…

What would you do if your website was hacked and infected with malicious software, or worse yet, destroyed all together? Score of websites are currently undergoing brute force attacks on their security. You’re even more susceptible if you’re using WordPress or Joomla because those sites are being targeted due to their popularity.

If you’ve never taken the time to install security precautions, there’s no better time than now. I spent my Saturday morning reading bout and making various security upgrades with the help of the crew over at wpbeginner.com.

Remember when nobody at your house could make a phone call at night because someone wanted to get on the Internet? Once on, you’d click a web page and wait 30, 60, or 90 seconds for a page to load. And that page was 90% text? Finally, you got DSL. At least you could be online and the phone. Then the Internet decided to become more graphic and video intensive.

For years we have been hearing about how awesome video conferencing will be. It exists, but it’s not that great. Connections drop, web traffic slows things down, and the list goes on. Even though some companies offer 50MBPS, the average U.S home Internet user is clocking in about 6.7Mbps. For as much as we live online today, that isn’t all that fast. Continue Reading…

I love technology (as you can tell from the header of this site), but I’m not always an early adopter. But last April (2012) I saw a watch on Mashable called Pebble. They had just started trying to raise $100K. By the time 30 days had passed, backers had pledged $10.3 MILLION. It is currently the most successful campaign in Kickstarter history.

What Is It? Continue Reading…

How many emails do you currently have in your Inbox? 10? 20? 200? More than 1,000? I know people who have as many as 500 unread emails sitting and waiting to be opened. While you may not be that bad, when was the last time your Inbox got to zero?

One of the problems with clearing out your email is sorting through the noise. Your email address used to be for emailing people. That probably only accounts for about 10% of my need for an email address these days. It’s hard to visit a website anymore where you aren’t required to enter an email address to gain access to most features. Some will let you login with Facebook or Twitter, but try using either of those services without having an email address. Not gonna happen. Continue Reading…

Raise your hand if you don’t like saving money. Great, I didn’t see any hands go up. Today I have a couple of apps for you that can help you save quite a bit of cash.

The first app you need on your phone is the one pictured above. I previously mentioned Coupon Sherpa almost a year ago, but it’s so useful, it deserves a repeat here. Coupon Sherpa is useful because it has a vast array of companies listed. When my wife and I are running around town, this app can save us a wad of cash in one outing. There are a couple of different ways to use it. Continue Reading…

So this is a bonus post today. Not really a bonus for you, more for me unless you are a Byword fanboy who loves to promote the software.

I’ve read several blogs lately (one, two, three) that reference Byword. Now that I am doing a lot more writing, I’m wondering if this is something I need. I currently do all of my writing in Evernote. I don’t really format my text as that is handled on my website using CSS. The little formatting I do is done with HTML when I create a link, use italics, a list, etc.

In other words, for writing projects, I’m already using Evernote as a straight text editor. I have the desktop software, the apps for my iPhone and iPad, and at work I use the browser version (since I don’t want my stuff synced to my work laptop). With Evernote, I have ready access to my resources files and things I’ve clipped from the web or emailed into Evernote. That seems like more of a reason why I wouldn’t want something like Byword.

However, I understand that it is hugely popluar among a number of writers I follow and respect, so I’m curious as to what I may be missing. I would appreciate it if you would leave a comment below or send me a message on Facebook or Twitter.

Thanks in advance.

Why Do I Need Byword When I Already Have Evernote?

2012 saw digital books outsell print books for the first time. A dominant reason for this are tablets such as the Kindle, Android, and iPad. Sales of laptops have declined in the last 18 months and were dismal during the holiday season. Windows notebook sales dropped 11% while Macbook sales were down 6%.

As tablets become more popular, many are leaving behind the laptop or Netbook in favor of the smaller and lighter tablet. My 17″ laptop weighs about 12 pounds. It doesn’t travel with me anymore. I take my iPad and Bluetooth keyboard. I still need use my laptop for photo editing (non-Instagram stuff at least), but almost everything else can be done on my iPad.

Many business users are traveling without their computers, opting for iPads as well. I like being able to leave my iPad in my bag going through airport security. This is not an option with a laptop (thanks a lot, Bin Laden). Apps are now available that include 48-track recording studios, full video editing, and even AutoCad software for engineers and architects. Those are some LARGE files.

Apple has noticed. On Wednesday they announced the upcoming release of the iPad Retina with 128GB of memory, doubling the largest memory option currently available. That kind of storage rivals the 13″ Macbook Air. Nom-business users will now have twice the storage for music and HD movies.

While I don’t see tablets ever killing off the laptop, this is the kind of thing that will certainly bring the sales of tablets closer to that of laptops. Mobile computing is rapidly changing.

Do you use your laptop or tablet more? Would you use a 128GB on an iPad?

Okay, I’m going to need a little help on this one. I downloaded this app for novelty, but other than that I have found no real use for it. Check it out, and see if you can tell me why you might need this app, because I don’t get it.

Clik is a simple app, really. Once downloaded you visit Clikthis.com where a QR code is displayed. On the top right corner of the app is a circle with a blue dot. Clicking this launches the camera so you can scan the QR code on your computer screen. Continue Reading…
