CloudOn: Free Office Suite for iPad and Android | David Christian

Mobile technology has come a LONG way in the last five years with the introduction of iOS and Android platforms. We can do more than ever with our phones and tablets, all on-the-go. Last fall I finally got my first iPhone (4s). I generally carry my iPad, especially to and from work. Together, these tools almost make my laptop obsolete.

But the one piece of software that I didn’t have was an Office suite. Since I don’t use Office that much, so I wasn’t willing to pay close to $30 for the software.

I do all of my writing and project planning in Evernote. For this reason, I rarely use Word. But I do have some legacy documents and I use Excel with some regularity. This meant not being able to do anything with those documents on my iPad without shelling out some serious cash (at least that’s a lot of money for an app).

Enter CloudOn. It is available for Android devices and the iPad. Oh, and it’s FREE!

With CloudOn, I store my documents in Dropbox (I still have the free version), or you can also use Google Drive and Box. Once I am logged into my Dropbox account, I have access to ALL of my files.

  • Format text
  • Insert formulas
  • Track changes
  • Use pivot tables
  • Give PowerPoint presentations (even with transitions)
  • View PDFs
  • View almost any file from RAW images to JPEGs and GIFs

You can create copy and move files all within your connected Dropbox or Box account. Once you are done making edits, you save it and the document is synced and accessible from anywhere.

And the cool thing is how they manage your security. They don’t actually store your documents on their servers. When you connect, your documents are pulled from your connected account (Dropbox, Box, or Google Drive). Once you are done and your documents are synced again, CloudOn wipes your files from their system.

For a full feature Office Suite editor, this is a great product, especially given the price tag of $0.00!

Are you currently using another mobile Office Suite? What has been your experience with editing documents on a mobile device?
